Apple's WWDC 2026, translated

Tim Cook walked onto the stage at Apple Park on Monday morning for his last WWDC keynote as Apple's CEO. After twenty-five years at the company, he hands the role to John Ternus on September 1. Ternus ran hardware engineering at Apple, overseeing iPad, AirPods, Apple Watch, and multiple iPhone generations.

I watch WWDC every year. Most of it is for developers. Some of it eventually shows up on everyone's phone. This year, more landed in the second category than usual.

Did Apple finally fix Siri?

Short answer: yes, and by a wider margin than I expected.

Apple has spent two years promising a smarter Siri and missing its own deadlines. The 2026 version ships with Google Gemini models under the hood, a standalone app, and real-time screen awareness. Hold your phone up and ask Siri something based on what's visible, and it follows through.

Apple was direct about the gap during the keynote. Craig Federighi's line: "We believe privacy in AI is non-negotiable," followed by a note that outside experts can verify Apple's data handling at any time. That's a notable commitment to put on record.

The Gemini partnership makes sense from where I sit. Apple gets AI capability without building a foundational model from scratch. Google gets distribution on over a billion devices. Both parties need this to work.

What this means for customers using Siri to find you

The new Siri reads the web. It surfaces businesses with accurate information online, complete Google Business Profiles, and pages that answer questions directly. When someone asks their iPhone to find a good auto shop in Carmel, or check whether a barbershop in Westfield is open on Sunday, they get a more capable answer than they did last year.

If your online presence is in order, you don't need to do anything new. If it isn't, fall is a good time to look at it.

iOS 27 performance numbers

Apple announced that iOS 27 runs on every device that ran iOS 26. iPhone 11 and up, no cuts.

The performance claims: app launches up to 30 percent faster, photos loading 70 percent faster, AirDrop transfers 80 percent faster. CPU schedulers were reworked to improve multitasking.

These are marketing numbers. Real-world results will vary. But Apple put specific percentages in a keynote, which means they'll be held to them when reviewers benchmark in the fall.

The macOS version is called "Golden Gate." Good name.

Liquid Glass gets a dial

If you updated to iOS 26 last fall and found the translucent UI more distracting than useful, Apple heard the complaints. iOS 27 ships with an opacity slider for the Liquid Glass design, so users can dial the transparency down or up. There's also a new layered effect on app icons that makes them look more three-dimensional.

Apple rarely acknowledges that a design decision needs tuning. This week they acknowledged it.

Tim Cook's last keynote

Cook ends his run the same way he ran it: without drama, shipping things. He took over from Steve Jobs in 2011 and spent fifteen years making Apple the most valuable company in the world. Ternus is a hardware engineer, not a marketer, and the next few years will tell us what that means for the product direction.

The keynote itself felt like a send-off. Cook spent the opening minutes acknowledging the developers in the audience in a way that read as deliberate. Then the slides took over, as they always do at WWDC.
