You're on Google Maps. ChatGPT has never heard of your shop
Ranking first on Google Maps no longer means an AI recommends you, and SOCi's 2026 index found ChatGPT names just 1.2% of local shops while your Google visibility barely carries over.
A heating and cooling shop in Noblesville has owned the top spot on Google Maps for "AC repair near me" all summer. The owner earned it. Two hundred reviews, a 4.7 average, every service hour filled in, real photos of the vans. Then a customer mentioned, almost in passing, that she had nearly called someone else. She asked ChatGPT for the best AC repair in Noblesville, and it named three shops. His was not one of them.
He is first on the map people used to use. He is absent from the tool she used instead.
A customer with a hot house in July does not always scroll a map anymore. She asks an AI, and the AI hands back a short list. There are at least three of those lists now, one each from Google's Gemini, from ChatGPT, and from Perplexity, and they rarely agree. Ranking first on Google buys you almost nothing on any of them. That is the whole problem in one sentence, and it is worth ten minutes of your week.
Why Google ranks you first while ChatGPT skips you
The three AI tools do not read the same internet.
Gemini leans on Google's own index and your Google Business Profile, so it is the one most likely to know you already. ChatGPT reads its own crawl of the web and Microsoft's Bing, not Google. Perplexity keeps its own index and cites its own set of sources. A shop that looks strong to one of them can be a blank to the other two.
The overlap is smaller than you would guess. SOCi compared the brands that win traditional local search against the brands the AI tools recommend, and in retail only 45% of them were the same names (SOCi, 2026). On Google's own AI Overviews, just 17% of the citations come from pages that also rank in Google's regular top ten results (SEO Sherpa, 2026). Being the top blue link, or the top map pin, is a weaker signal to an AI than almost anyone selling you "AI optimization" wants to admit.
The numbers: three engines, three short lists
SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index ran the same test across more than 350,000 business locations, counting how often each tool actually recommends a given local shop. The results:
| Where a customer looks | How often your shop can show up |
|---|---|
| Google local 3-pack (the map) | 35.9% |
| Gemini | 11% |
| Perplexity | 7.4% |
| ChatGPT | 1.2% |
Read the bottom row again. ChatGPT recommends about one local business in a hundred. The report put it plainly: AI recommendations are roughly 30 times more selective than the Google map you are used to. The shops it does name tend to carry a 4.3-star average or better, so reviews are part of the filter.
This is not a behavior you can wait out. A July 2026 study by Whitespark found Google now shows an AI Overview on 68% of local searches. For the "near me" questions people actually type, like "how long does an eye exam take near me," the AI answer appears 92% of the time. For pricing questions, the ones that decide who gets the call, it is higher still.
Being first on Google Maps is a race you already won. The AI your customer just opened never entered you in it.
What actually gets a shop into an AI answer?
An AI barely reads your homepage. It reads what other people have written about you, on sites you do not control, and that is the exact thing most agencies are not selling you.
Across the AI tools, 82% of the links they cite come from earned media, other people's websites, not your own (SEO Sherpa, 2026). Reddit is the single most-cited source. Directory listings, local news, forum threads, and third-party "best of" pages carry more weight with an AI than the About page you paid to rewrite. I wrote a few weeks ago about "AI SEO" packages that mostly reword your site. The data is why they do so little: the AI was barely reading your site to begin with.
The things that do move the needle are unglamorous and mostly free:
- Reviews, real ones, enough to clear that 4.3-star bar. This is the one lever that shows up in every AI's logic.
- The same name, address, and hours everywhere. If your Google, Yelp, Apple Maps, and Facebook listings disagree, an AI reading all four gets nervous and skips you.
- Mentions you did not write. One honest thread on r/indianapolis, a spot on a local "best AC repair in Hamilton County" roundup, a paragraph in a neighborhood newsletter. These are what the Reddit-heavy models feed on.
- Plain pricing and answers on your pages. "Most AC tune-ups run $89 to $150" is the kind of concrete line an AI will lift and repeat.
What to do this week
Open ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Type your town and your service the way a customer would: "best barber in Fishers," "emergency plumber near Zionsville." Then search your shop by name. You will learn, in about five minutes, which of the three already knows you and which have never heard of you.
If two of them come up blank, you are in the normal range, not in trouble. Start with reviews and with making your listings match. Those two alone move you up every list at once, the map included.
The heating shop in Noblesville is fine, by the way. He was one thread and a dozen fresh reviews away from showing up, and he is on his way to it now. The map made him a little lazy, in the good way. It just stopped being the only scoreboard while he was not looking.
