Google gave your Maps listing bigger boxes and nowhere to hide an empty one

Google redesigned how your business info displays on Maps this year, wrapping every field in a bigger rounded container. An empty one now reads as a bigger empty box.

Google gave your Maps listing bigger boxes

I was checking a bike shop's hours on Google Maps two Fridays ago, trying to catch them before close on a ride down the Monon. The page looked different than I remembered. Every piece of information now sat inside its own soft, rounded card: the address in one, the hours in another, the phone number lower down in its own pill-shaped button.

Then I got to the description card. It was empty, the kind of empty that used to hide inside a thin gray line of text and now sits inside its own large rounded shape, impossible to miss. I noticed it the way you notice a picture frame with nothing in it.

Google gave every field on this bike shop's Maps listing more room. That gave the empty one more room too.

What changed on Google Maps

The look is called Material 3 Expressive, Google's current design language across its own products. It reached Android and Gmail in 2025, and by this summer had extended to Google Maps, where Google grouped description, address, website, and phone number each inside a rounded container, dropped the thin separator lines, and reshaped the buttons into pills, according to 9to5Google's reporting on the Maps update. Google's own announcement describes the shift as bouncier, more visually distinct components across its products.

One word from that description is worth keeping: container. Every piece of information about your shop now sits inside its own visible shape instead of blending into a page of small text. That is a real design decision, and it changes what a visitor notices first.

Does a bike shop need to care what Google's design team is doing?

The shapes and the button colors are Google's business. What you need to watch is what a container does to information that isn't there.

A thin gray line of text that says nothing draws no attention. A big, rounded, empty card pulls the eye straight to it.

A brewery I looked at in Garfield Park has this exact problem with hours. Monday through Thursday are filled in correctly. Friday through Sunday, the days that matter most for a brewery, are blank. On the old design, that gap read as a missing row in a small list. On the new one, it reads as a hole in the middle of a card a visitor is staring at while deciding whether to drive over tonight.

What to check this week

Open your own Business Profile on your phone and read it the way a stranger would, not the way you already know it.

  • Description. Google allows up to 750 characters but only shows the first 250 before someone taps "more," according to Google's own help page on managing your description. If yours is blank, that's now a big blank card. If it's one lazy sentence, write four more. Say what you sell and who it's for, in your own words, not Google's auto-generated version.
  • Hours. A card with three days blank reads as "we don't know either."
  • Phone number. The call button is now a larger pill, easier to tap and harder to miss. Good, as long as the number behind it still rings at your counter, and isn't a disconnected line from a plan you canceled two years ago.
  • Photos. They still sit above all of this, and the container layout gives them more room too. A blurry photo taken in 2019 looks worse in more space, not less.

A blank box used to blend into the page. Now it's the biggest shape on it.

This takes fifteen minutes with your own listing open, read slowly, the way a customer standing outside your building at 8pm on a Friday would read it before deciding whether to knock.
