Google Ads can add website discounts to eligible campaigns; check the offer's terms and remaining margin before letting Google advertise a sale you cannot afford.

A 20% discount can cut the money you keep from a sale in half.

Suppose you run a garden center in Avon. You sell a planter for $50 and pay your supplier $30. Take 20% off, and you collect $40 with $10 left before advertising and overhead. These are example figures. I would write down your version before letting Google pull a discount from your website into an ad.

Google now documents automated promotions: it can find offers on your site and attach them to eligible campaigns. Check the offer customers see, then check whether you can afford to honor it. Google's help page explains the feature.

Can Google add a discount to my ads?

Google lists active Search or Performance Max campaigns with location assets and no manual promotions running as eligible. Location assets are the business-location details you attach to ads. Google describes those details in its account-level assets guide.

The October 2026 development concerns automatic enrollment. Search Engine Roundtable published Google's notice to some advertisers, naming October 12 as the start date. Google's public help page does not give that rollout date. Check your account's setting rather than assuming every advertiser changed on the same day.

An offer's presence on your site deserves a check even if you never put it in an ad yourself. You might have removed a September sale from the homepage while leaving the offer on a product page linked from an old email.

Remove expired discounts from the pages customers can reach. Give one person responsibility for taking each offer down on its end date, including the product page that still gets visits from an old email.

How do I check or turn off automated promotions?

In Google Ads, open Campaigns, then Assets. Filter the asset type to Promotion and look for Google AI in the Added by column. Hover over that label for sourcing details. Compare the advertised terms with the page and your checkout or booking process. Google documents this inspection here.

For the setting, open the three-dot menu in Assets and choose Account level automated assets. Open its three-dot menu, then Advanced settings. Set Automated promotions to Off if you want to manage offers yourself, and complete the save or reason prompt. Google's account-level controls guide covers that settings area.

Turning it off does not fix an outdated page. Visit the offer on your phone and follow it through to the amount a customer would pay. Our ad landing-page check covers that test.

How much can you spend to sell the discounted item?

Use the same planter example, with $24 in advertising that produces three sales. Hold the supplier cost at $30 per pot:

Calculation Full price 20% discount
Customer pays per planter $50 $40
Amount left after supplier cost $20 $10
Amount left from three sales $60 $30
Amount left after $24 advertising $36 $6

You still need to cover payment fees and other costs. This illustration holds sales volume constant; it does not predict whether a discount will bring more buyers. You need your own sales records to answer that.

On a $50 planter that costs you $30, a 20% discount leaves $10 before advertising and overhead.

I would compare paid orders with ad spending over the same dates. Our Google Ads budget test shows another way to turn a percentage setting into a dollar amount you can check.

Give time-limited offers a schedule

A detailer in Westfield might offer $25 off a $175 interior clean on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A customer booking Saturday needs to see that restriction before submitting the request. Use this as a second test case: compare the offer's wording with the available appointment days.

Google's manual promotion controls let you specify eligibility dates and days or hours. Distinguish the times you want Google to show the ad from the appointment dates that qualify for the discount. Write the booking restriction on the destination page and enforce it in your booking process.

Ask a staff member to try one eligible booking and one outside the offer. If your website cannot show the right terms or charge the right amount, give your developer those two examples. We can also scope that repair through our website services.

Before you put up the next holiday sale, open the old offer page. Take down anything you would have to explain away at the counter.
