Google changed your ad budget on June 1

Starting June 1, 2026, Google changed how it paces ad budgets for scheduled campaigns. If your ads run weekdays only or business hours only, your monthly spend could be up to 38% higher with the same daily budget setting.

Google changed your ad budget

A dental practice in Carmel set their Google Ads daily budget to $80 and scheduled ads for weekdays, 8 to 5. Their June invoice was $352 higher than May. Same campaigns. Same keywords. Same clicks, roughly.

They called thinking their account got hacked.

It didn't. Google changed how they pace ad budgets on June 1, 2026. The practice's account was doing exactly what Google told it to.

What did Google change on June 1?

Before June 1, when you set a daily budget and paired it with a restricted schedule, Google paced your spend across your active days. Eighty dollars a day on weekdays meant roughly $1,760 a month across a typical 22-weekday billing period.

Starting June 1, Google paces toward your monthly cap instead. Your monthly cap is always 30.4 times your daily budget, regardless of your schedule.

For that $80 daily budget: $80 × 30.4 = $2,432. Google spreads $2,432 across 22 active weekdays. Average daily spend on those days: $110. Same setting in the dashboard. About 38% more actual spend.

The billing ceilings stayed the same. Google can still only charge up to 30.4 times your daily budget in a month, or up to 2 times in a single day. The change is in how aggressively Google pushes toward those caps when your schedule is restricted.

How much more are you spending?

Pull up Google Ads. Find any campaign with a schedule that is not 24/7. Two numbers:

  • Daily budget × 30.4 = your new expected monthly spend
  • Compare that to your April or May spend

If the gap is larger than your budget can absorb, you have two choices.

Option 1: Lower your daily budget. Divide your intended monthly spend by 30.4. That is the daily budget that holds it. If your target is $1,760 a month, set the daily budget to $58, not $80. The math is the same as before. You are just moving the input number.

Option 2: Leave it. If your ads are converting and the cost per lead has not moved, additional reach on active days can work in your favor. More spend on days you are already running is not a problem if the return holds.

Pick one deliberately. "I'll check next month" is how shops end up with a surprise on their June statement.

Which businesses this actually affects

Any shop running Google Ads on a restricted schedule. Most common: medical and dental practices running ads during office hours so calls land when staff can answer. HVAC and plumbing contractors pausing evenings and weekends because after-hours leads go straight to voicemail. Any service business that built its schedule around staffing is in the same position.

If your ads run around the clock, this change does not affect your number. Google was already pacing toward the full monthly cap across all 30.4 days.

One detail Google confirmed: Local Services Ads are not included. If you run LSAs alongside standard Search campaigns, the pacing change applies only to the Search side.

One thing to do today

Log into Google Ads. Go to Tools, then Budgets, then Budget Alerts. Set a monthly spend threshold. You will get an email if spend crosses it.

Three minutes. It will not fix the math, but it means you find out before the invoice does.

If you set your Google Ads budget last spring and haven't touched it since, check it this week.
