What a $1,200 marketing package buys (and how to tell if it's working)
Small business social media packages run $500 to $2,500 a month in 2026, and most contracts never promise a single lead in return. Run the math before you renew one.
A mechanic in Carmel called me last month holding an invoice. Twelve months in, $1,200 a month, to a marketing company he found through a Facebook ad. He wanted to know if it was working. He couldn't say, and the invoice couldn't say either.
That $1,200 buys most shops the same package in 2026: twelve posts a month, two platforms, comment replies, and one report at the end of it. Nowhere in his contract does the word lead or appointment appear. He was paying for posts, and the contract never said what those posts were supposed to produce.
What does a marketing package cost in 2026?
Real numbers first. Digital marketing agency WebFX put small-business social media packages at $500 to $2,500 a month in its 2026 pricing survey, with the most common range landing between $1,500 and $3,000 for a package that adds strategy and photography. Sprout Social's 2026 breakdown lands in the same band, $500 to $5,000, with freelancers charging $35 to $150 an hour. The mechanic's $1,200 sits in the light tier: content creation, a posting calendar, and comment moderation.
Divide $1,200 by twelve posts and you get $100 a post, a fair rate for a freelancer's time. The trouble is what that $100 is supposed to buy: a post counts as content, not revenue, and his contract never tied the two together.
What should you measure instead of posts?
Compare that $100-a-post figure to what a lead costs somewhere else. Local Services Ads, Google's pay-per-lead product for service businesses, averaged $53 a lead across 888 contractors and 126,650 leads in a February 2026 benchmark from SearchLight Digital. Plumbing ran closer to $69. Electrical landed near $49. Appliance repair, on the cheap end, ran $12 to $30. A May 2026 follow-up from The Data-Driven Trades put the blended number at $63 across 1,011 home service businesses, plumbing back up near $69.
Each of those numbers is tied to a person who called and said come fix my car or my sink is leaking. A shop paying $1,200 a month for content should be able to hold that spend up against $53 a lead and ask which one is filling the schedule.
A follower count doesn't pay your rent. A booked appointment does.
Three questions before you renew
Ask your agency for three numbers before the next invoice goes out.
How many of these posts led to a phone call, a booking, or a form fill? A calendar entry or a register ring counts. A like doesn't.
What would a lead cost if that same $1,200 ran through Local Services Ads or Google Ads instead? If the agency has never run that comparison, that's the answer.
Who keeps the account, the photos, and the login if you leave? A chiropractor in Noblesville found out the hard way that her marketing package included an Instagram account she never had the password to. Eight months of posts and customer photos disappeared the day she asked to cancel.
What's worth paying for
Social media works for a shop when the posts are tied to a target: a phone number people call, a booking link that gets clicked, a promo code that shows up at the register. Posting on a schedule with no target attached is expensive theater with a monthly invoice.
Fixing this takes one sentence at your next check-in with whoever runs your accounts: show me which post led to a sale this month. If that answer takes longer than it should to find, the invoice already told you what it's buying.
