Every slide in your carousel just got its own caption (finally)

Instagram rolled out per-slide captions on carousels in June 2026, and for a shop posting step-by-step photos, that is the difference between one caption doing ten jobs and ten captions each doing one.

Every slide in your carousel just got its own caption

A barbershop in Fishers posts the same carousel most Fridays. Four photos: the clippers laid out, the chair, a fresh fade from the back, the shop dog in a bandana. One caption sits underneath the whole set, something like "clean fade, walk-ins welcome." All four photos share those six words.

That changed a few weeks ago, quietly enough that I doubt anyone told him.

What Instagram actually changed

Instagram began rolling out per-slide captions on carousel posts on June 18, 2026, reaching most accounts within about a week. A toggle labeled "multiple captions" now sits in the carousel composer. Flip it, and every photo or video in the set gets its own text box instead of one caption for the whole post. The limit is still twenty slides, so a shop can write up to twenty captions if it truly needs them.

Swipe to the next photo and the caption changes with it. That sounds small. It is not.

Why this matters for a shop that isn't a media company

A carousel used to force a choice: write one caption general enough to cover every photo, or write one caption and let nine photos go unexplained. Most shops picked the first option and ended up with captions so vague they said nothing. "New arrivals." "Fresh batch." "Another one done."

Per-slide captions turn a carousel into something closer to a contact sheet with notes scribbled under each frame. You are not writing one sentence anymore. You are directing a sequence, the same way a menu directs a meal or a shop window directs a walk-in's eye from the door to the register.

A tailor I know in Irvington still books fittings in a paper notebook. Her Instagram is the one modern thing about the business, mostly single photos of finished hems with a caption like "another one done." A carousel with per-slide captions is the format her actual work has been asking for the whole time. Pin placement, first fitting. The take-in, second fitting. The final press, ready for pickup. Three photos, three captions, one story with a beginning and an end, instead of a folder of finished hems with no order to them.

A carousel used to be one caption doing ten jobs. Now every photo gets to say its own line.

What should a shop actually post with this?

Anything that already happens in steps. A brake job at a shop in Greenwood: the worn pad, the new pad, the torque spec written on the invoice. A tasting flight at a brewery on Mass Ave: the pour, the color held up to light, the one-line note a bartender would actually say out loud. A boutique building an outfit for fall: the base layer, the added piece, the finished look on a rack instead of a mannequin.

Carousels already outperform single photos on Instagram. Hootsuite's 2025 engagement data puts carousels around a 10 percent engagement rate against roughly 7 percent for single images, and they reach more of an account's followers because Instagram serves them more than once. Per-slide captions give a shop a reason to actually use the format instead of dumping ten similar photos under one line and hoping.

There's a second benefit that has nothing to do with algorithms. Screen readers read captions aloud slide by slide now, so a visitor using assistive technology follows the same sequence a sighted visitor does, first fitting to final press, instead of hearing one caption and nine silent photos.

The next time you build a carousel, do not write the caption last. Write four of them, one per photo, before you even open the app. That's the whole difference between a caption and a sequence.
