The assistant that finds your shop by voice goes away on September 4
On September 4, 2026, Google starts deleting Google Assistant from Android phones, watches, earbuds and Android Auto. Gemini answers instead, and it reads your Business Profile as text rather than ranking it as a map pin.
"Hey Google, find a vet that's open right now."
My neighbor said that into her steering wheel on a Sunday in June, one hand driving, one very unhappy beagle in the back seat. Her phone answered out loud. She drove to the second clinic it named.
On September 4, the thing that answered her stops existing.
Google begins removing Google Assistant from Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, earbuds and Android Auto on that date, and the rollout takes a few weeks to reach everybody. Gemini inherits the "Hey Google" wake word and the long press on the power button. Google's own wording leaves no door open: once it is gone from a device, "you will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant."
For your shop, one thing changes. Assistant matched a spoken request against a pin on a map and read back the top of the list. Gemini reads your Google Business Profile as text and writes a sentence about you. The fields you left blank used to be blank space. Now they are the reason it names the clinic down the road instead.
What changes, and on which device
The cutover is uneven, and the unevenness matters more than it sounds.
| Device | What happens on September 4 |
|---|---|
| Android phones and tablets | Assistant removed, rolling out over a few weeks |
| Wear OS watches | Removed on the same schedule |
| Headphones and earbuds paired to an Android phone | Removed on the same schedule |
| Android Auto projected from a phone | Removed on the same schedule |
| Cars with Google built into the dash | Keeps Assistant past September 4 |
| Nest speakers and displays | Keeps Assistant for now, no date announced |
| Phones too old to run Gemini | Keeps Assistant, "will not change at this time" |
So for the rest of this year the same question gets two different answers depending on what the customer is sitting in. A driver in a 2019 Civic with a phone clipped to the vent gets Gemini. A driver in a newer car with Google built into the dashboard still gets Assistant. Same question, same shop, two different engines reading your listing.
Why should a shop that never thought about voice search care?
Assistant ran one command at a time. "Vet near me" went to Maps, Maps returned a ranked list, Assistant read the top of it. Ranking did all the work, and your job was to rank.
Gemini answers in sentences. Since December 2025 it also pulls photos, ratings and hours from Google Maps into visual cards underneath the answer. Ask it something with conditions attached and it tries to honor every one of them.
People say longer things than they type. Nobody types "orthodontist in Carmel that takes Delta Dental and has Saturday hours." Plenty of people say exactly that out loud on Keystone at 5:30.
Assistant matched you to a pin. Gemini has to find a reason to say your name.
Every clause in a spoken question works as a filter, and every filter runs against a field on your Business Profile. A blank field fails quietly. You never see it happen, and Google never sends you a note about it.
Which fields do the spoken questions actually hit?
| What somebody says out loud | What gets checked |
|---|---|
| "open right now" | Regular hours, plus the special hours for holidays |
| "that takes walk-ins" | Attributes and the services list |
| "that does brake jobs" | Services, in the words a customer would use |
| "with parking" | Accessibility and amenity attributes |
| "that's good with kids" | Attributes, plus the text inside your reviews |
None of this is new plumbing. It is the same profile data Ask Maps has been reading since March, which I got into when Ask Maps started answering out of your attributes, and the same data behind the questions Google has been calling shops to collect. September 4 only changes the scale. Every Android phone in Marion County switches to the engine that reads your listing that way, all at once.
What should I do before September 4?
An hour of work, and none of it costs money.
- Ask Gemini about yourself, out loud. Open the Gemini app on an Android phone, say the sentence a customer would say, and listen. If it names three shops and you are not one of them, you have found your homework.
- Fix your hours, including the special ones. Labor Day lands on September 7, three days after the cutover starts. "Open right now" is the condition I hear attached to spoken searches more than any other, and a wrong holiday hour makes you wrong in the most expensive way.
- Fill in your services in customer language. Write "brake job" and "oil change," not "friction system service." Gemini is matching what somebody said, and nobody says the trade term.
- Fill in every attribute that applies. Parking, walk-ins accepted, wheelchair access, appointment required, payment types. These are checkboxes. They take ten minutes and they are the exact filters a spoken sentence produces.
- Put the same facts on your website as real text. If your hours live inside a photo of a printed sign, or only appear after somebody loads your booking widget, a crawler reads an empty page. I got into that version of the problem in how a shop gets named in Google's AI answers.
If you would rather hand that hour to somebody else, it is most of what our maintenance work is. It is also genuinely a thing you can do yourself on a slow Tuesday, and I would rather you knew that.
What I would ignore
Somebody is going to email you a "voice search optimization" package this fall, priced around $400 a month, timed to land right after the headlines. Delete it. There is no separate voice index to get into. Gemini reads the same Business Profile fields that Maps reads, that Search reads, and that ChatGPT reads through Bing. One profile, filled in properly, serves all of them. Google spent this spring labeling some of those AI SEO packages as spam, which tells you what it thinks of the category.
The honest version of the work is boring. Hours, services, attributes, photos, and a website with words on it.
My neighbor's beagle turned out to have eaten a sock. The clinic that got her was open, listed its Sunday hours, and said "walk-ins welcome" on its profile. The one two miles closer had none of that filled in. It was also open that day.
