Apple Maps gets ads this summer most shops haven't claimed their listing
Apple Maps is adding paid ads this summer. Claiming your free listing now takes fifteen minutes and keeps a competitor from appearing above an unclaimed version of your shop when iPhone users search nearby.
I needed an auto detailer in Brownsburg last week. Pulled up Apple Maps, typed "auto detailing," got four results. Three had hours, at least one photo, and a number that worked on tap. The fourth had a name and a street address.
I'll bet the owner of that fourth shop doesn't know what their Apple Maps listing looks like. Most shop owners don't. They set up Google Business Profile a while back and figured that covered it.
This summer, that gap starts costing money.
What Apple changed in April
In March 2026, Apple announced Apple Business, a free platform that consolidates what used to be called Apple Business Connect. It launched April 14, available to any business in the US and 200+ countries worldwide.
The part that matters now: starting this summer, Apple is adding paid ads inside Apple Maps. Ads will appear at the top of search results when an iPhone user looks for a type of business nearby. A new "Suggested Places" feature will also surface businesses based on what's trending in the area.
Once those ads go live, shops with complete listings will sit alongside paid placements. Shops with bare, unclaimed profiles won't be in that conversation.
iPhone users are 53 percent of US smartphone owners. More than 100 million people use Apple Maps every month in the US. When someone asks Siri to find a tire shop in Avon, or opens Maps and types "lunch" on a Saturday, the listings that show up belong to the shops that set them up.
Who's actually ready right now
As of mid-2026, 58 percent of US businesses have not claimed their Apple Maps listing. Only 16 percent have set it up and kept it current.
In most neighborhoods, most of your direct competition hasn't claimed theirs either. The shop that sets up before ads launch starts the summer a step ahead.
Once paid ads are live, a shop with a complete listing sits right next to the sponsored results. A bare address with no photos isn't in that picture.
How to set it up (about fifteen minutes)
Go to business.apple.com and sign in with your Apple ID. If you don't have one, any email address and two minutes will get you started.
Search for your business name. Apple imports most businesses from public records. If yours is already in there, claim it. If not, add it from scratch.
Fill in your hours, address, phone number, website, and primary category. The category matters most. It's the signal Apple Maps uses to surface you when someone searches for your type of business. Pick the most specific one that matches what you do.
Add at least three real photos of your actual space. Your counter, your front entrance. Somewhere a stranger can tell it's a real place before they drive over.
Submit for verification. Apple usually confirms within a day or two.
After setup, you can add current offers, a booking link, or seasonal items directly to your place card in Maps. An auto shop could flag "free tire check with every oil change this month." A restaurant can link directly to their menu.
Do this before summer, not after
Apple said "this summer" in their March announcement. That window is June through September. Ads could go live next month. Every week you wait, more of your competition may be getting their listing in order.
The setup is free and takes fifteen minutes. A restaurant in Noblesville or a barbershop in Fishers with updated hours, real photos, and a correct phone number will look like a real business in those search results. A shop still showing only a name and an address will not.
