Instagram gave your bio a new shelf (and it's mostly sitting empty)

Instagram redesigned the banner strip under business bios this year and is now testing business hours and contact info banners, turning space most shops ignore into a second storefront window.

Instagram gave your bio a new shelf

A gym in Avon has eleven thousand Instagram followers and a bio that says the gym's name, then the gym's name again as a hashtag, and nothing below it. I pulled the profile up at a stoplight last week (parked, to be clear) and found a whole strip of blank space sitting right under the bio where something useful could live.

Instagram has been quietly building out that strip for almost a year. Starting this month, it's testing something shop owners should actually pay attention to.

What changed on Instagram profiles in 2026

The strip started small. In late 2025, Instagram added a single banner option to business profiles: a WhatsApp link, sitting as a pill-shaped button under the bio. In April 2026, Instagram redesigned that banner row to make it more visible, and let you add a new banner with one tap instead of digging into Edit Profile.

Then in July, Instagram started testing two new banner types built specifically for business accounts: Business hours and Contact info. Neither is live for most accounts yet. Testing on Instagram usually widens over several weeks before it becomes a toggle everyone can flip, so this is a preview, not a feature you can turn on this afternoon.

What is the banner strip for?

Think of it like the sticker line on a shop's front door. Before someone reads your hours or your menu, they read the door: open or closed, cash or card, dogs welcome. The banner row does the same job, above your photo grid instead of below your name.

Right now the banner options live for everyone are a link to another Meta platform, a featured song, a Meta AI agent link, and, if you turn it on, a WhatsApp button. A bookstore in Zionsville I checked last week uses the WhatsApp banner to route event RSVPs. It was the only filled-in banner strip I found among a dozen local business profiles I looked at that afternoon.

A blank banner isn't neutral. It's a closed sign hanging in a window that's actually open.

What should you put there this week?

  1. If you take orders, bookings, or questions through WhatsApp, turn on the WhatsApp banner. It's one tap in Edit Profile, and it puts your fastest contact method above the fold.
  2. If you don't use WhatsApp, leave the strip blank rather than filling it with a featured song or a link nobody asked for. An empty strip photographs better than a banner that doesn't help anyone.
  3. Watch for the Business hours and Contact info banners. When they land, treat them like the hand lettered sign taped to a shop window: they answer the first question before a customer has to type it.

Is the business hours banner worth waiting for?

Most of the small businesses I talk to already fight this exact battle on their website, on their Google profile, and now on Instagram: three places that can each say something slightly different about when the doors are open. A dentist in Noblesville told me in June her Google hours and her website hours had drifted a full hour apart for two months before a patient caught it. Instagram testing a hours banner means there will soon be a fourth place that number can go stale.

The fix isn't complicated. Whichever hours you update, update the other two the same day. A five-minute habit beats a banner nobody trusts.

The bookstore in Zionsville didn't redesign anything. They filled in a blank that was already sitting there. Most shops still haven't.
